It Lives Inside 2023

Two Indian-American girls are the central characters of It Lives Inside. Former best friends Samidha (Megan Suri) and Tamira (Mohana Krishnan). Then, everything was different. Tamira withdrew and became grumpy, while Sam began to widen her social circle. A demonic presence penetrates both of their lives, pulling them back into each other’s spheres of influence. Director Bishal Dutta’s horror film, which I believe to be the greatest I saw at the 2023 Fantasia International Film Festival, masterfully blends top-notch shocks with a richly developed plot. On September 22, NEON will give it a standard theatrical release.

In their high school, Sam and Tamira are essentially the only Indian female students. To her mother Poorna’s (Neeru Bajwa) dismay, the former has tried and still attempts to adapt, preferring instead that she cling more closely to tradition. Sam makes an effort to encourage her peers to look past her ancestry as part of her desire to blend in. She also distances herself from Tamira in this regard. When her former buddy arrives looking for assistance from the only person who might comprehend, the task gets more difficult. She displays a jar in which she says there is a “monster” imprisoned. Possibly, the creature is about to get away.

Sam ignores it until incredibly unsettling things start happening all around her. She discovers that the monster is a “Pishach,” a demon from Hindu and Buddhist mythology that devours human flesh. When it escapes from the jar, it kidnaps Tamira and torments Sam, focusing on those nearby. Investigating cultural myths and legends will be necessary to find a solution to stop it. In other words, her white pals won’t be able to help. When a teacher, Joyce (Betty Gabriel from Get Out), notices Sam is upset, she steps in to help.

It Lives Inside works in large part because of a new kind of wicked monster. It had the ability to make me feel uneasy in a way that zombies and vampires typically don’t anymore because I had never heard of a Pishach before. You will have to research the Pishach on your own to learn what it does and how it accomplishes it. Let’s just say that the movie contains two of the most terrifying scenes I’ve recently seen. One concerns a swing set, the other a locker at school. Dutta establishes an ominous tone throughout and intersperses moments of great dread to illustrate the risks facing the young women. You can actually feel how in danger they are.

The devil and the jar are unmistakably metaphors for sadness and other issues that kids face in the contemporary society, although Dutta only fully develops a few of these concepts in this movie. There is a lot of conversation that attempts to be profound, yet it is often confusing. I was so confused by a passage in Samidha’s speech about what was formerly outside now being within that I was unable to pay attention to what followed. The cast is left with little to cling onto and gives generally useless performances because they are forced to play the circumstance rather than anything else due to the lack of conversation that actually develops characters or even tension. Another horror movie where the characters appear to be aware that they are in one by acting warily.
