Talk to Me concerns a young woman named Mia who attends a local party with her peers where the teenagers accuse her of having the ability to communicate with the dead. Wilde’s lead performance, based on familiar emotional subtext, creates a character whose tragic journey is impossible to get away from. The setup of horror in this film is simple and well organized. At a party, those interested in experiencing communication with the deceased are asked to hold a hand allegedly severed from the body of a deceased psychic. Mia volunteers, and upon touching it, she sees the gruesome face of a sunken, bloated corpse. Mia is used as a medium for the demonic spirit, and we watch in gleeful horror as she screams angrily at the mocking crowd of young men around her.

Of course, there are important rules to break. If the human incarnation holds the dead hand for more than a few minutes, the veil between worlds thins with dire consequences. Chekhov’s gun is soon pointed in the direction of these young characters, to whom we are already very attached, and terrible chaos ensues.

In my conversation with filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, they revealed that part of the inspiration for the film was based on a particularly disturbing real-world incident where a young man reacted badly to a drug overdose. was given, which was filmed by the laughing crowd. This sickly voyeuristic example of humanity at its worst provides an anxiety-provoking baseline for his first feature film. These real-life moments, and some seen on screen, are a stark reminder that crowds don’t provide protection. And that the greatest evil is often the apathetic gaze of the audience.

What I admire most about Talk to Me is its consistency of effectiveness and fear. It’s funny, mean and downright simple. In a horror landscape that often tries to outdo itself with bloated high concepts, this cracker of a release gets refreshingly straight to the point. The dead eyes of deadly ghosts will amaze you with their cold, longing gaze. And the film’s scariest scene bears a vague resemblance to The Forward as seen in Insidious: a glimpse into a dirty, depressing, and shockingly strange life.
