After their plane crashes, a rugby team from Uruguay is left trapped in the Andes Mountains for 72 days. To survive the terrible conditions, the remaining members are compelled to consume the bodies of their slain friends. This film, “Society of the Snow,” by J.A. Bayona, is based on genuine events that happened in 1972 and were the basis for the Hollywood production “Alive” in 1993. Based on Pablo Vierci’s novel of the same name, Bayona’s telling explores the survivors’ mental and spiritual battle to preserve their humanity in the face of the most horrific actions, going beyond a straightforward story of human tenacity.
The screenplay by Nicolás Casariego, Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques-Olearraga, and Bayona explores the characters’ psychological effects in depth, going beyond the physical struggle of survival. The story analyses the actions that were previously unimaginable but became commonplace for the survivors. “Society of the Snow,” which Spain submitted for nomination in the international feature Academy Award category, has made it onto the Oscars’ shortlist for visual effects, original soundtrack, and makeup and hairstyle.
With “Society of the Snow,” Bayona returns to directing Spanish-language films after making his feature debut in 2007 with the gothic horror fable “The Orphanage.” The director’s conviction is still based in reality and substance, even in light of Bayona’s later English-language pictures, such as the popular “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” (2018) and the tsunami survival thriller “The Impossible” (2012). The movie was partially filmed in the real remote crash site and primarily in Spain’s Sierra Nevada mountains. By keeping the attention on the characters and their experiences, Bayona makes the production work blend in with the scenery.
Unflinching realism characterises the crash’s portrayal, which captures the force that breaks bones as chairs and corpses fall in a domino-like fashion, producing an almost surreal survival scenario. The survivors’ lives are once again upended by an avalanche as they attempt to reestablish some form of normalcy.
