adminLet’s talk about the premiere of Parts 1 and 2 of Dave Filoni’s live-action Ahsoka series. To better understand certain elements of the series, we need to take a step back for a moment and look at Dave Filoni. Filoni has a long history with Star Wars that began in animation – he was involved in the creation and introduction of Ahsoka’s character – and only recently transitioned into the live-action arena; he has always shown an interest, not only in the Star Wars universe but more importantly, in how George Lucas envisioned and created Star Wars. As for Ahsoka. The premiere threw us right into the thick of things, as many people are calling it Season 5 of Star Wars Rebels, another of Filoni’s past animated stories. New faces, new spaces, and new tensions emerge side by side with old ones. But it’s not just a continuation of Rebels, Filoni has gone back even further to the beginnings of Star Wars The Clone Wars because so early in this new series we are confronted with the consequences and questions arising from Ahsoka’s long-ago decision to leave the Jedi Order before Order 66 and the fall of the Jedi. Some critics have complained that the palpable tensions between Ahsoka and Sabine reduce the premiere to a mother-daughter conflict.
Lucasfilm has always been a pioneer in special effects and works to push the boundaries further, but also admits where things have gone wrong and work to do better next time. As a result, some technical issues are to be expected. Most of the special effects have turned out wonderfully so far. The costumes, the predatory cats, what I think is the use of The Volume, the movements of the droids, and the close-ups of the ships – all have feature film quality. I do think Ahsoka’s headgear moves a little too freely and could be tightened up a bit, but that’s my biggest criticism of the costume.
