Introduction

John Woo has crafted a revenge thriller that follows a predictable plot. It’s so predictable that one can envision the first multicellular organisms sharing an electrochemical version of it through osmosis. However, despite its predictability, it is considered one of Woo’s finest works and one of the most visually stunning films of the year. This movie exemplifies the notion that the execution of a story holds more significance than the actual narrative itself.

Silent Night 2023

The Stellar Symphony

Slinet Night 2023: A Celestial Ballet

The film, titled “Silent Night,” takes place during Christmas time. During this period, the main couple tragically loses their only son to a stray bullet. This unfortunate event occurs when rival gang members drive through their neighborhood and engage in a shootout. However, it is important to note that the movie’s title, “Silent Night,” is not related to the holiday carol of the same name. Instead, it is called “Silent Night” because it is a silent movie with sound.

No one utters a complete sentence in the written dialogue. Characters make grunting sounds when they collide with a wall, receive a blow to the stomach, or are hit by a car. Throughout the story, you can hear sound effects and noises from the environment, such as wind, rain, footsteps, and traffic. The soundtrack includes pop songs with lyrics, mixed with long periods of Marco Beltrami’s deeply emotional and unapologetically melodramatic score. However, the characters do not engage in conversations like regular people would. Instead, they communicate through looks. If they are alone and contemplating something tragic or troubling, they may stare into space or down at their hands, lost in their thoughts.

The Cosmic Choreography

It’s not like they do this kind of thing all the time, you know. Most of the time, they’re engaged in deadly combat, utilizing firearms, fists, feet, blades, explosives, vehicles, motorcycles, and even ordinary household items. Alternatively, they’re engaged in surveillance, strategizing, strengthening their bodies, honing lethal abilities, and so forth, because that’s the nature of this film: the type where actions speak louder than words.

Those who dislike the movie may argue that it is unrealistic or that its constant maintenance by the filmmakers is more distracting or alienating than engaging. To such individuals, I can only say, “This movie is not meant for you.” The film’s commitment to its concept is what makes it truly special. Its meticulousness results in a pure cinematic experience, combining visuals, sound, music, and performances. This is what cinema is all about.
